Understanding Your Newborn’s Vaccination Schedule

Mother holding newborn during pediatric vaccination

Welcoming a new baby home here in Concord, NH, is such a whirlwind. Between the sleepless nights and the sheer volume of diapers, your brain is already working overtime! One of the biggest topics on every new parent's mind is newborn vaccines. It’s totally normal to have questions about the schedule and why we do things the way we do.

At Concord Pediatrics, we want you to feel like a partner in your baby’s health. We see vaccinations as a shield for your little one, helping their brand-new immune system stay strong against diseases they might encounter as they grow up in our beautiful New Hampshire community.

Why the "Early and Often" Approach?

You might wonder why we start newborn vaccines so soon. It’s all about biology! When babies are born, they have some "borrowed" immunity from their moms, but that wears off pretty quickly. The vaccination schedule is scientifically designed to bridge the gap and protect them exactly when they are most vulnerable.

Think of it like a training camp for their immune system. We’re teaching their body how to recognize and fight off "bad guys" (like Whooping Cough or Polio) in a safe, controlled way, so they’re ready for the real world.

Understanding the Newborn Vaccines Schedule

We follow the guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) because they’re the gold standard for safety. Here’s what those first few months usually look like:

  • At Birth: Your baby gets their first dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine. It’s the very first building block of their lifelong protection.
  • 2 Months: This is a big milestone! Your baby will receive vaccines for DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis), HibPolioPneumococcal, and Rotavirus.
  • 4 Months: We usually do a second round of the same boosters from the 2-month visit to keep that immunity building.
  • 6 Months: A third round of boosters, and if it’s the right time of year, we can also talk about the Flu vaccine.

Making the Office Visit Easy (For Both of You!)

We know that nobody likes seeing their baby get a "poke." At Concord Pediatrics, we’ve seen thousands of babies through these visits, and we have plenty of tricks to keep things low-stress.

We provide a supportive, friendly environment where we encourage you to soothe your baby through nursing, a bottle, or skin-to-skin contact right after their shots. Most babies forget about the poke within a few minutes, especially if there are extra snuggles involved.

We’re Here for Your Questions

Our job is to provide you with the best information so you can make the best choices for your family. We’re not just here for the check-ups; we’re here to be your "home base" for newborn vaccines and all things parenting.

Give Concord Pediatrics a call today to schedule your newborn’s next well-child visit. Call our Concord, NH, office at (603) 224-1929. We can’t wait to see how much they’ve grown!
